Trek Log: 002 - Holo Drills and Borg Trills
Well, Starfleet has finally done it. After six whole weeks of non-stop drill, I can honestly say that I am without a doubt... sick of the damn holodeck.
They say it's a fleet wide effort to up our readiness, but Starfleet has been laying it on real thick. I haven’t had to train this hard since the Academy, and I ain’t gettin’ any younger. I’m hurting all over, and I’m not the only one. Command has really been running us through the grinder; Tactical Sims, Espionage, First contact, Engineering, Diplomacy. Sims with Klingons, Sims with Romulans. Hell we’ve been tackling a drill that contains those "Neural Parasites" that the captain of the Flagship ran into a couple years back!
I wish they’d give us a break... maybe run us through one of those uh, Ferengi programs I’ve heard so much about? Yeah right. I guess if we run into holograms out there, we'll know just what to do.
At least I've been able to train alongside a number of my fellow officers, some of which I’ve gotten to know pretty well. It's an old starfleet tactic to run a "prospective" crew through drills and evaluations together to see how they jell before they get onboard, especially with a brand new command. That way they know who works best with who, and everyone can settle in that much easier. At least Starfleet isn't skimping on the quality of it's sailors these days.
Of course we’ve got a Vulcan onboard. Savek has shown himself to be professional, courteous, and a tough. I swear I even saw him smirk when he blasted a ball past my head during a Parise Squares match. I've served alongside a few Vulcans and they can be a bit... smug. We've become fast friends.
Ryan is another officer that stood out. fantastic pilot and a wiz with computers and mechanical engineering. He even built and programmed a new holo-interactive simulation of some old earth battle from scratch. I'm no historian, but those enemy fighters looked pretty real to me, especially from my flaming cockpit. Real fun guy, good to drink with too.
Tom (Nook I think?) is more scientist than fighter pilot, so it's strange to see him wearing the red rather than the blue, but damn that man loves his data collection. He seems to be a bit late to the the fleet, but he's got that “old man wisdom” going on. Bit of a gambler, but I can’t hold that against him. Poker is a helluva game.
Yeren is a Trill... and a recovered Borg. I actually didn't think Starfleet had recovered anyone other than Captain Picard up till now, but I'm not surprised I have'nt heard about it. Command seems more concerned with destroying the Borg BEFORE they can get close enough to assimilate us, and anything after that seems secondary. To look at him, you really wouldn't know it. He's really talkative and gregarious. Typical Trill. However, I've seen that man lead a fireteam into a hail of disruptor fire and come out unscathed. Rumor has it he's going to be our new XO, though there are a number of Command officers onboard the starbase, so I guess we'll see. I've seen him with walking with the Captain at times, so I assume there is some truth to it.
The new Cap is a bit of an enigma. A bit imposing, and constantly watching our training runs. My bet is he”s putting a crew together in his head. Ive met him only once, and was polite but a bit stiff. I looked up his record and it'll be his first command. Guess he’s as nervous as we are. Funny thing is, we both go to the Tai-chi and Karate classes at 0600 hours on deck 12, and you wouldn't think a man of his size would move so fast or gracefully. Hits like a freight train too. One thing we share; we both speak Russian, and have family in the Urals. I have a good feeling about this one.
Lieutenant Ford and I've been working pretty closely the past week or so. At first, I couldn't understand exactly why he was here, but I soon found out. The man is a dedicated workhorse. I've seen him pull shifts that the most excited bright-eyed cadets would balk at. He's smart and tough, and while hard to rile up, won't back down once you do. He reminds me of a Algorian Mammoth, piss him off and he'll make you sorry. His aptitude for mechanics and engineering is pretty impressive, not to mention his piloting skills.
Considering all these expert pilots we seem to have wandering around, maybe starfleet really is looking into that whole ancient carrier idea? Doubtful... but who knows. SF is pulling out all the stops lately so it wouldn’t surprise me.
It's no secret that most of us here have been assigned/transferred to the same command; which should be arriving from the UP shipyards soon. An old rustbucket named the Resnik... Centaur Class. Jeeze Starfleet really is scraping the bottom of the barrel if they are putting our people on ships that old. I've only seen one or two before and they were being phased out long before I was a cadet. But I've read the briefing on the Crash Refit Program sweeping the fleet, so maybe it won't be all bad. These old birds were built pretty tough... maybe some new systems and a fresh paint job is all she needs. Well... that and a good crew.
Guess that's enough "Logging" for now, I've got another sim waiting for me at 0530 hours. Great.

P.S- That councilor has been messaging me for updates every couple of days. She really is too damn good at her job.
